My Students
What better way to contemplate what makes us human than Gregor Samsa, waking up one morning to discover that he is an insect?
The 12th grade students in Being Human will be thinking critically about what it means to be human.
What defines us? What do we value? What divides us from everything else in the world?Students come from all over Philadelphia to Science Leadership Academy, where they embrace an education rooted in inquiry. The learning they do extends far beyond the hours of the school day or the walls of our building. SLA is exceptional in many ways, but because we are a small school in a big city, we still face challenges in funding the programs our students crave and the activities in which they thrive.
My Project
In "The Metamorphosis," Franz Kafka explores so many of the themes that our class will grapple with this semester. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean for Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who wakes up one day in the body of an insect? What happens when our minds and our bodies become disconnected? When we deal with the humanity of others in our lives -- our coworkers, our friends, our families?
A story that is ultimately rooted in absurdity challenges these ideas and allows us to tackle deep concepts.
I am so excited to be part of the discussions and dynamic projects that this seminal text will generate in 12th grade English.
