My Students
"What is a scientist after all? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what is going on." - Jacques Cousteau
This project will assist twenty 2nd grade Hawaii public school students in developing their curiosity about nature and the world around them.
This class is a cultural melting pot, which includes Native Hawaiians and military dependents. In addition, my classroom is the inclusion classroom, which incorporates all students to love to learn! Many of my students lack the basic background knowledge and experiences about many 2nd grade science topics.
My Project
My students need nonfiction texts, manipulatives, iPad minis, and storage for Science based literacy / hands on activity centers, which include web based programs. These materials will foster curiosity and independence in the classroom. Students will learn to create their own questions around topics (Science standard based/own topic), research that topic, create a hypothesis / experiment (if needed), and publish their findings. In addition students learn to work in various group settings (individually, pairs, or larger groups) when maneuvering through different rotational stations. These stations would include a center to develop tier 3 vocabulary with context specific vocabulary (vocabulary match ups), a research station with web based science activities and videos (iPad mini), a publishing station using journal applications and tablet camera (iPad mini), content specific hands on activities (plan /life cycle activity tubs), and rich literacy experiences based on Science topics (plant, life cycle, rock reading centers). Students will learn in depth about standards based topics (life cycles, rocks / minerals, plants, and animals) and of their own.
Through this project the students will become scientists and research collaborators while questioning the world around them.
These materials will assist in teaching students life skills, such as independence, collaborative skills, close reading strategies, questioning the world, researching a topic, sharing their opinion / knowledge with others, and using technology ethically.
