Help me give my students get a math classroom that inspires calmness and collaboration. My scholars have returned to the classroom feeling anxious, overwhelmed and lacking confidence.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My scholars have a growth mindset. They came to school and according to our IXL diagnostic averaged at fourth grade skills. We quickly set goals and they were on their way. Then the Omicron wave happened and many missed school. This was triggering affect for many and I started to notice they became depressed and anxious. Nonetheless, they work on shifting their mindset and focused on their studies. My scholars are the reason I stay strong and positive. They inspire me to keep focused and not give up. They are my constant motivation.
I have done my best to create a warm welcoming environment through the use of lighting and color.
I have warm patio lights hanging on the ceiling to create a beautiful cafe inspired mood. I have decorated our walls with data and backdrops with math equations. I have scented smell when they walk in and rugs that I purchased that are math inspired.
However, flexible seating in beyond my budget. I cannot afford comfortable chairs for our small group table. I also cannot provide different sitting options around the room. I know that this is an expensive wish list and my only wish is that it becomes a reality for my scholars.
They deserve this reward for putting in so much hard work. For not giving up and being determined to grow regardless of their initial starting point. We just took our final benchmark and 10% hit proficiency and 31% are highly proficient. Yet, we left for spring break determined that upon returning we will help the rest of our classmates hit proficiency by providing one on one support in the math classroom.
My scholars are paring up with me to support others. This is what a community of learners should look like.
