it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are reluctant readers, so we utilize ANY resource available. I showcase high-interest topics that the TikTok/ Instagram generation resonate with; Comic Book/Graphic Novels, recently exploded from various creative Universes (Marvel, etc). A long- champion of using Comics and Grapic Novels in class teaching literary elements, these varied supplies will help us do projects, light-hearted assessments, with low-risk artistic representations of "essential knowledge and skills" (they call 'em TEKS in Texas, ya'll....). Old-fashioned coloring and drawing- linked to the literary elements that we've studied-- Afterwards revealing, like the cliffhanger-ending- that students analyzed, synthesized, applied, conceptualized, joyfully LEARNED.
As a Title I English teacher (multi-sport Coach) of more than 20 years, I have played a very unique role as the advocate of literacy on the field, court, in the locker-room, and proponent of meeting reluctant readers, where they are-showcasing hidden talents of students that love the graphic arts, mixed-media compositions, and integration of comics into the "stuffy" arena of Literary Classics.
Returning to Education, after a brief "retirement/recharge", I'm continuing my mission with our Madison Librarian, a loyal ally, fighting the "evil" of illiteracy- dedicating this project to our Sean, Michaela, and Noel- stalwart, angelic heroes lost; as great comic fans they'd heartily approve (Sean's birth/death date is our symbolic deadline).
It started with comic references, utilizing graphic novel stories, informational-text articles, movies, thematic tie-ins to philosophy/pop culture, morphing into a wall-to-wall battle action-figure-scene in the MCU. Donors, "With great power, comes great responsibility...." , wont you help Librarian Extraordinare (Katina Wright) and I usher in a new multiverse on campus where Nerds, Jocks, Preps, Wallflowers, and even Goth kids enjoy art projects, bringing to life artistic representations of literature, prose, poetry, and instructional text? Like the heart of Xavier's Dream, Mutant- Human Coexistence- Let's train the Next Generation's Heroes.
