Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us connect with our community and show off our talents. I teach every subject to my second grade students. Our school is located in a medium to low income area of our city and our free-lunch count qualifies us for Title One funding. We have a very high mobility rate.
With such a high mobility rate for many of our students, they have a hard time developing the skills they need in second grade. Reading fluency and public speaking don't come easy for any of the students. The students love to become other characters and the Stone Soup play does just that. Our class loves to compare different versions of the same tale. One of the best things to increase comprehension is graphic organizers and they love to do Venn Diagrams to tell how stories are the same and different.
Our parents aren't as involved as they could be due to various reasons, but my students love to involve their parents as much as possible.
To accomplish all that will help the students with necessary skills in reading we need the food and pot props for the play. Reading in a play will help all the student build fluency. The students work hard to learn their lines in the play. The props are a necessity that make the students fell like real actors and actresses.
To extend the students understanding of the story a wide variety of the tale is necessary. Our classroom will be loaded with different comparison graphic organizers. They students develop a lot of background knowledge of different cultures with folktales like Stone Soup as well.
To bring in their families and the community in we need to have a stone soup luncheon and to help complete the meal we would need a crock pot to have the students involved the making of a real batch of stone soup. The students could then put on their play for their parents and discuss the version of Stone Soup that they enjoyed the most.
With your help my students will be able to feel confidence in their reading abilities as they put their play for other classes in our school. You will help broaden the horizons of many students who will never leave their own state by giving them a tale that comes from all areas of the world. Help us show our parents that they are always welcome in our classroom, so their child can show them all that they have learned.
