This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty." - Albert Einstein-
For students with learning disabilities history class is usually a hard duty rather than a meaningful learning experience. Making History aims to change that for my students.
Everyone of my 7th and 8th grade history students is a special education student.
They are students with varying levels of learning disabilities. One common area of need is reading an writing. Compounding the issue, at least 80% of my students have guardians that do not speak English. Poverty is also a roadblock to learning in our district. Ninety-eight percent of my school's student body is on the free and reduced lunch program. Academics are challenging for the majority of my students. What they need is more time with new content in order to retain it. Plus, Opportunities to participate in large community based projects that ask the students to use their self expression are few and far between. Even with all of these obstacles my students remain positive, friendly, and thirsty to positively express themselves. Our art classes are always full.
I hope this history class with an integrated public art focus will quench their creative thirst and fuel understanding of the content.
My Project
The aim is to utilize the creative expression of art to educate my students. Each semester the students in my three history classes will produce one mural that is relevant to the world history content. During the first semester, each class of 15-20 students will produce a smaller mural (10'x 12'.) This process will help galvanize the community spirit of the students within one class by working together to create one image. The subject matter will be student and content driven. Examples are: maps marking student family origins, define freedom, breaking the class structure. During the second semester, I will have students in all classes work together on one larger mural (10'x 30'). The brushes and drawing materials will be used for many murals. However, the paint will need to be replenished for next school year. What we are starting with these funds is a school beautification student centered service learning program. Our students are ready to make their own art history.
Our kids need something more than standard academics driving motivation to improve their skills and do things that they have never been able to do before.
Art is inspiring! Communication is necessary. Art that communicates student voice permanently on the walls of their own learning community could be just the little bit of energy that they need to take the necessary steps to reach academic and personal success. Making school history is a special thing in which a kid can participate.
