Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

My Students
The students at my school are wonderful. When you visit the school I teach at, you will notice students making eye contact and greeting you with a smile. They are kind, curious, and collaborative. They love hands-on activities and projects and always, always apply themselves to their learning.
My Project
My students will use the materials from this grant to conduct hands-on science experiments twice per week. All experiments are connected to the New Generations Science Standards (NGSS) for 5th grade.
Students best construct new knowledge by witnessing an experiment unfold and talking about it, making meaning with each step.
My 5th-grade class was fortunate enough to be awarded a Donors Choose grant at the beginning of this year. Since most of them had not received a solid 4th-grade science education due to distance learning, I decided to teach all the 4th-grade science standards first. After four months in school, we have engaged in science experiments and discussions four days per week and are ready to move on to the 5th-grade standards after winter break.
This brings me to the reason for writing this grant: I would like to continue bringing hands-on science experiments to my students to allow them to discover, explore, hypothesize, and construct knowledge in a meaningful and engaging way. We will use materials such as safety goggles, baking soda, food coloring, and vinegar in experiments to teach all three strands of science: earth, life, and physical. We typically pose an anchor question that grounds our learning within the unit. We then engage in hands-on science experiments twice per week and use the other two days to compare and discuss our findings, partner and group share, and write journal entries.
