This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Books are a uniquely portable magic." -Stephen King, On Writing. My students have language challenges that impact their ability to decode and understand books. However, their enthusiasm, persistence, and skills increase when presented with a book from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
My students attend an inner city elementary school.
Our diverse, low income school community includes many English Language Learners and students with academic and social challenges that require specialized interventions, such as speech and language therapy. I treat these students in a small group setting. They have difficulty decoding books, answering questions about stories, making inferences, and summarizing books. This negatively impacts their ability to think critically, gain knowledge, and engage in conversations with their friends about the books they read. After repeated, negative experiences with reading, these children become disinterested in books and their self-esteem is affected. However, this changes when a student brings a book from The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series to therapy. The cartoon illustrated book is passed around the group. The students read sections aloud to one another and discuss the travails of Greg Heffley and his friends.
My Project
Speech-language pathology research supports the use of books that students are familiar with to expand their language skills. When clinicians use evidence-based practices in conjunction with high interest books, their students' ability to decode, answer questions, infer, summarize, and synthesize improve. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have the resources to purchase books from Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. In addition, our school library carries few copies of these "high demand" books. For this reason, I am requesting copies of two books from the series: Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book. My students and I will deconstruct the sentence structure and review the vocabulary of the first book in the series to foster understanding. We will discuss the subtleties of humor and how they impact the story. My students will then apply their new knowledge by creating their own tales in The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself book.
With your donation, my students will have the opportunity to read, analyze, and discuss the first book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
Then they will create and illustrate their first autobiography in The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book. Through your generosity, students will improve their reading, writing, and social skills while discovering the wonder of books. Thank you for your review and consideration of this project.
