The Magical Carpet Ride to Effective Communication

Help me give my students a place to get together during read alouds and classroom discussions to get them up and moving out of their desks!

My Students

Clear and open communication plays a pivotal role in every classroom, but my students are at an age where they are beginning to learn how to clearly articulate and express their thoughts, feelings, and opinions with not only myself as their teacher, but with their peers.

We work together to create and maintain a welcoming, comfortable classroom community that centers itself around each and every individual being open about their thoughts, feelings, and opinions without feeling embarrassed or wrong.

It is generously rewarding to be able to listen to students reflect, connect, and discuss what we have read (such as "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis) in class with each other; especially as we continue our learning throughout the year. As much as I dislike saying goodbye to my students at the end of the year, I can look back and see all of the personal and academic growth of each student stemming from our first whole group discussion to our last.

My Project

The classroom rug will be used in my classroom to provide a warm and inviting place on the floor for my students to sit on during our read-alouds and classroom discussions.

I have found that my students tend to be more vocal and more willing to share their thoughts when we are all seated on the floor as a group, than when I am at the front of the room and they are seated at their desks.

Although my students are more comfortable to share while seated on the floor, I want my students to be able to be physically comfortable-- this rug will provide me with the opportunity to give that to them.

The presentation easel will be used to write down and record our thoughts, opinions, and observations during read-aloud activities and other discussions (either as a whole class or small group). The easel will provide me the opportunity to better "share the pen" with my students and make them feel empowered and heard. Because chart paper will be used on this easel, the students will be able to see each others' handwriting/thoughts, not just mine, hanging around the classroom.
