My Students
I teach 3rd grade in a Title 1 school in downtown Charleston. My children surprise me every day. They are kind, inquisitive, and hilarious. Some of them are uncommonly shy, while others are blessed with boundless energy. They make the best of every bad situation and can take a day from "good" to "amazing." I teach in a high poverty elementary school. All of my students receive free/reduced lunch and free breakfast. I empathize with their circumstances and home lives.
I know how important education is to break the cycle of poverty.
I am doing my part to try to close the achievement gap for the children that aren't given as many privileges, but I cannot do it without resources.
My Project
I have always dreamed about my third grade Harry Potter classroom and now we get to work together to make that dream come true! While I plan on using the illustrated version of the book as a read aloud, I want my students to each have their own copy to follow along in, reference, and reread.
These books and supplemental materials will help bring the magic of Harry Potter to life.
I plan on completely transforming my classroom into Hogwarts. The students will be sorted into houses, they will earn house points, and work together throughout the year to win the House Cup! This book will not just be a 5 week book study. This book will encompass our entire year!
We all have that one book that ignited a love of reading in our lives. For most of us that book was Harry Potter. However, I know that some of my students just might not get as into it as me. I have also included two small group sets (6 copies) of books that students in the past have adored. These books will give my students the opportunity to see characters like themselves in literature, something that some of us can take for granted.
