The Magic Of Music!

My students need a variety of musical instruments such as a piano, electronic drums, a violin, and hand bells to maximize their creative outlets and enjoy the wonder of a musical education.

My Students

Research demonstrates that the arts and music education enhances and improves academics in the classroom. We make music in my classroom, but it is constrained to listening and singing. I would like to expand the arts instruction by allowing my students to also play and experience a variety of instruments.

I teach a wonderful group of first graders at a school in Southern California where forty percent of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and all of the students receive free breakfast daily.

Our school loves to integrate the arts and technology into our academics because we know that many students get inspired and thrive in an atmosphere where they can explore and have fun too. We are a school of many cultures and many students speak another language other than English at home.

My Project

Students will use the piano, electronic drums, percussion instruments and hand bells in a variety of ways. They will experience everything from free time when they can experiment with rhythms and sounds, to formal instruction by me in percussion and basic creation of melodies and notes on a variety of different instruments. I also hope to use the instruments to begin reading musical notes. It is my intention that students will use these skills to create and perform their own music individually, in small groups, and hopefully as a full class. I would also like to use the music to inspire students to write songs and poetry.

This project would outfit my classroom with a significant array of tools to expand creativity and inspire learning.

Students will not just learn to create, they will learn to collaborate, write, read music, perform, and enjoy music. This project will make a difference because many students who normally would be unable to experience musical learning will now have the opportunity to begin a musical journey.
