This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are proud of their urban community, but are faced with several obstacles both in and out of the classroom. Many of my students have very little opportunity for enriching life experiences, and they enjoy being in a classroom, which provides them with a sense of structure, continuity, and safety.
My students thrive when challenged and are eager to succeed, but some do not have the means outside of school.
My students are wildly creative, inquisitive, and spontaneous. They like to move. They love to do hands-on activities, and they crave positive reinforcement.
Many of my students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their household income. From the moment they walk into my classroom, I try my best to focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire my learners to challenge themselves.
My Project
During our first two units of study: physical science and life science, my young scientists will explore the amazing world of microbes. We will develop a coherent understanding of the structure and properties of matter to make sense of the anchoring phenomenon.
During the unit, my fifth grade scientists will come to understand that microbes play a HUGE part in helping to answer our first driving question, “What happens to our garbage?
The students will be engaged in three-dimensional science where they will build individual landfill systems with soil and food waste, weigh the matter at three different points with digital scales and use agar plates to see bacteria colonies doing their part in the decomposition of our garbage. The effective anchoring phenomenon, use of a driving question board, and connections of the lessons to the phenomena all work together to create student curiosity and hands-on fun. The featured practices are clearly developed over time, allowing students to make sense of challenging content while developing targeted skills and knowledge.
