Global creators of projects for a global audience is what makes our classroom unique. Students publish to our class website everyday and people from around the world follow us. Our wall map still shows the Soviet Union as a country. We need a new map to find our site visitors' origins.
My fifth grade students live in a rural community that was designated a financially distressed municipality in 2002 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Many of the students in my classroom have never been out of our town, but they are very curious about the world.
My Project
I am requesting a combination United States and World wall map on rollers. These maps in addition to global projects our class participates in will help the students in my class this year and in future years to gain a greater understanding of the world. After skyping with a class from Poland, it will be meaningful for them to pull down a world map and find out where in the world Poland is. When countries from around the world show up on the tracking feed on our website, students will be able to find the countries on a map. Students will be able to find a place quickly or just be able to stare at a map out of curiosity that may lead to research to learn more about a place they see. Most importantly, my students will realize they are part of a world that is bigger than what they see right in front of them.
Knowledge of the world is important for today's students, because they live in a global society.
Using maps to develop their natural curiosity will help them to realize that they are part of a larger world.
