Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Seventy percent of the students that attend the school at which I teach fall below the poverty line and are often not exposed to rich literature at home. I teach third graders that run a wide range of reading abilities and needs, from students with special needs to gifted learners. This project brings a dose of magic into our classroom while teaching my students strategies that help them maneuver and learn more about the genre of fantasy regardless of their reading level.

I could give you the "teacher" reason on why I have created this proposal, but I want to begin by explaining that ALL kids love magic. I think even some of us "big kids" love it too, hence the cultural draw to the Harry Potter books and movies. This project was designed with that in mind: open a door to a world of great books that many children never really considered before. This is the key to creating life-long readers, constantly exposing them to great books, by reading out loud and exposing them to new reads. I want to be able to do this systematically, but I need help! We need books! After teaching fifth graders for five years, I recently was asked to teach third grade, but was disappointed to see that many of the books that I had collected over those years were too difficult for my incoming third graders. This project, if funded, will help extend our classroom library for years to come, but will be used as a springboard for many great lessons that cannot happen without a little bit of magic called generosity!

This project will help bring excellent fantasy literature to my students, serving a two-fold purpose. One, it will help extend my students' knowledge of literature by exploring and reading different genres. Secondly, it helps build our classroom library, so following the culmination of our Genre Study Project, my students will be able to enjoy these beautiful books throughout the rest of the year.

Your help will ensure that my students have access to high-quality literature and will continue to grow as readers reading REAL books. Too often, teachers are limited to using their school's basal program, which transforms beautiful books into abbreviated stories bound by a test-prep mentality. This project is inspired by the idea that children CAN and DO learn by reading authentic literature. Thank you in advance for reading this and helping my students become life-long learners and readers!
