THE MAD SCIENTIST HIGH TECH CLASSROOM
I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science in a predominantly African American inner city school located in an underserved neighborhood. Most of my students are considered at risk for dropping out and they have very little experience with science. I have developed a unit on The Cell which will cover cellular organelles, mitosis and meiosis, all topics which they will be tested on for the ISAT (Illinois Standardized Assessment Test).
Currently, my students have had little experience with science up until this point. They have had experience with a microscope that is from the DARK AGES. As a teacher, I feel compelled to provide the students with rich learning experiences that will help them develop skills that prepare them for high school science.
Consequently,I am in need of 5 new microscopes to provide rich scientific hands on learning experiences that will positively impact student learning, ensuring that they know the cell inside and out. These microscopes are identical to the microscopes used in high schools. Therefore, my students will be one step ahead and prepared for 9th grade biology and the 7th graders have a better shot at scoring high for the ISAT test.
Your assistance with this project will make it possible for my students to develop a solid science background in middle school that will surely increase their interest in science, increase their knowledge of cells, DNA, human bodily functions and disease, as well as prepare them for high school.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
