My Students
The city of Chicago has received its fair share of media coverage in the past year. Shrunken public school budgets, teacher strike threats, and gun violence within a segregated and divided city is the environment my students function in. Despite these barriers, our school ranks among the best in the city, and this speaks to the character and tenacity of the young people I serve vehemently every day. The conditions they are subjected to should not hinder their opportunity at a world class educational experience. Our public high school serves neighborhood students on the southeast side of Chicago. Our demographics are roughly 70% African American and well over half are low income and eligible for free-reduced lunch. Despite these odds, we still have over a 70% success rate of college acceptance with many of our students attending Ivy League institutions and prestigious public universities.
My students are inquisitive, brilliant, astute, and truly a vision of promise for the next generation of leaders for our society.
As a history teacher, I am always striving to enhance the historical thinking skills of my students as well as equipping them with collegiate skills of research and argument based writing.
My Project
Your donations will contribute to materials that will help foster historical thinking skills and primary source literacy with the United States constitution as the focus. Our US history class is always engaged in inquiry and analysis as it relates to important texts. The content is not always about important people, dates, and events, but how we can evaluate the past based on what has been left behind. The Constitution is one of the cornerstone texts of United States History that still has major implications in society today. By reading the constitution students will not only understand the historical context of how this document came to be but also become informed citizens. The large easel paper will be used for collaboration with reading comprehension and the development of new ideas from the The Constitution. Funding this project will assist in establishing a culture of learning and growth in my classroom.
