This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty area, and often lack the love for reading. By creating a comfy and inviting library/listening center space, I hope to instill a love for reading before they can even begin to open up a book!
My students live in a dense, poverty-stricken neighborhood riddled with gang activity.
It is not the environment that lends itself to succeed in an academic setting. The 16 students who make up our classroom are atypical learners and many are currently unable to read. The majority of my students have been identified as having a Specific Learning Disability. They need all of the support that they can get.
My Project
Small group instruction is imperative for my students. For this to be achievable, the students who are not working with a teacher must be able to work independently. A task that is often very difficult for a non-reader. A literacy listening center will allow students the opportunity for this independence. This project will make a difference in our classroom because students will be able to continue to make gains without being dependent on teacher assistance. This listening center will truly aide in student success in our classroom!
