Picture cultures around the world and then put them all into a room of 22 first graders!
I teach 22 English Language Learning first graders that are beginning to learn to read at the same time as learning to speak English. We are a high need school with many different cultures and languages spoken. In my class of 22, I have 7 different primary languages spoken. These are children who need an exciting classroom library and we have very little outside resources in our community. Our school has an extremely high population on free and reduced lunches (very low income families) and thus I am turning to you!
These students were not expected in our school this year. Their class was a last minute arrangement (more students than expected last year) and the room has little supplies! The classroom has the bare minimum. These are students that need to learn to read and speak and they need the books and bins to get them there!
This project will allow students easy access to literature. A class library will enable students a wealth of easy reading opportunities as well as enabling easy classroom management for the teacher. When students complete assignments early they will be directed towards the class library until the next assignment or project begins.
Please make a difference in the lives of these beginning readers! Help to cross cultural barriers by bringing together students of 7+ cultures through literature. Empower students to become self managers by giving them choices in their own classroom.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
