The Lions Youth Sports Teams Need Your Help!

My Students

“The only way to prove that you’re a good sport is to lose.” – Ernie Banks My students get very few opportunities to take pride in themselves and their school. At the end of the season, I want my students to feel confident and be prepared to be a role model for the younger students in our school.

Our school belongs to the largest, most urban school district in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Around 80% of our school population qualifies for free and reduced-price lunch. Our students face many challenges at home and at school. These students are bright and eager to learn, but do not always have the resources readily available to achieve their true potential. The students at our school have few chances to take pride in themselves. With the pressure of testing on their young shoulders, these students have little time to play and be kids. Having a youth sports team provides the students with an outlet for their extra energy. They get to practice each week with their friends and strengthen those bonds.

My Project

Our students will use the materials to improve their athletic skills. The volleyball teams will use the knee pads to ensure their safety while they practice and compete. They will use the volleyballs to work as a team and improve their fundamental skills. Our school currently does not have enough basketballs to support a boys and a girls basketball team. With the help of the sponsors, our school will be able to provide enough basketballs to ensure that both teams will be able to practice and strengthen their skills. Our students will learn to work as a team. They will learn to respect each other, as well as the teams they compete against. Our students will also improve their academics. The students are motivated to do well in school because they love the opportunity to participate in the teams. They become role models to younger students because the rest of the school sees the confidence in these young athletes and want to emulate it.

With everything that happens in their home lives, school can appear to be another challenge that they cannot overcome.

The opportunity to participate in athletics provides the students with a safe place to spend their afternoons. They get to improve their athletic skills while being mentored by teachers that care about them. In order to be eligible to play, students must maintain a set GPA as well as follow a strict conduct code highlighting the importance of respect: for others and themselves.
