The Lion King is Coming to Chicago

My students need a cultural experience. I desire to take them to see a Broadway play in Chicago. I want them to experience being in the presence of the performer.

My Students

Our school doesn't have counselors, we have advisory. I am responsible for assisting 20 Black & Latino boys in getting to and through college. I have a passion for that assignment and I want to give them every opportunity to view the world before they graduate, one cultural experience at a time.

I am a math and science teacher and was assigned 17 freshman boys.

My daily task is to keep their GPAs high and their detention count low. I am in constant contact with their parents to assure that they are on the right track to gaining 100 percent college acceptance. My boys met every challenge in their first year. This year I have 3 new additions. They are now sophomores! My boys are a great bunch: 20 African American and Latino boys from Chicago. They are a well-rounded group of all scholars, athletes, and some have learning disabilities. Each one individually is the sweetest gentleman you would ever want to meet. Their first year at our school they were mandated to have 10 Service Learning hours. My boys went above and beyond, most completing the year with over 20 hours. We often spend time together after school finding ways to bond. This year I want to expand their bonding outside the walls of school.

My Project

Broadway in Chicago is bringing "The Lion King": The Lion King has not been to Chicago in 10 years. It is a world renowned play about family and love. Based on the Disney movie that most children have seen, this is an opportunity for my young men to see that cartoon live and in color. The visuals of the play are positively astonishing. This is the productions 18th year running. So I am more than sure that it can only be better than the previous years. I first saw "The Lion King" about 10 years ago. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I want my boys to experience that same sense of awe. There is no experience like live music and theater. These scholars may never have the experience of seeing a Broadway production again.

My advisees will be going to college in 3 years and I want them to be able to see and do as much as they can before they have to go into the world alone.

They should be able to share rich cultural experiences with other scholars in college and I feel this would be a great start. Although I know the day itself will be an unforgettable experience, it is the life long impact of sharing that moment within a brotherhood that I want ingrained in their memory and in their hearts.
