Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are using a great curriculum for Language Arts this year, and instead of having to hunt around the district and beg other teachers, I would rather house a class set of The Lightning Thief. It is hard to capture the imagination of 6th graders and this adventurous tale does this.
We are located in South Phoenix at a Title I school.
We are a community school and it is hard to for families to supply their students. Asking them to purchase the book for student use could cause a small burden on the family. I want to help bring great literature to young minds without having to reach into the family's budget.
My Project
My students need a class set of Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief. We will use this book as part of a literature study to help them understand and strengthen their reading skills. My hope is that every student will be able to have a book in their hand during the duration of the unit. I teach all of 6th grade ELA, so I have 2 classes of students, therefore one book will be servicing two students. I am also requesting a literature guide so I can use thoughtful activities which will help the students form a better understanding of the story and its purpose. As a teacher I want to help guide them to comprehending the process of a story and how the characters, setting, and elements of the story help bring the reader into the adventure. This adventurous story also ties into our Social Studies unit in Greek Mythology, so it will be doing double duty scholastically. I also want to encourage students to read and help build enjoyment from getting lost in the tale whether it be set in today's time and environment or one of long, long ago.
This will help students to have the necessary supplies to become successful in learning reading skills from a wonderfully adventurous story of a character that is not far from their own age.
It will help open their eyes and possibly leave them wanting to read more which in turn will help build and form strategies which will help them throughout their scholastic career.
