My 2nd grade classroom is very diverse. I am the designated 2nd grade inclusive ELL teacher. Most years I have approximately 12 ELL students. I also educate students who are special needs, academically challenged, and emotionally challenged. My school is a Title I school with extremely high poverty. Many of our children are facing situations that impact their lives dramatically. It's very difficult to educate some of these students when I'm faced with so many in need of school supplies, resources for curriculum in addition to emotional support. I try my best to help where I can because my students deserve it, but it can be difficult for me at times being a mom of 5 children. My current library in my classroom does include some leveled books which is great, but it is very limited. I also have some children who are above a 2nd grade Reading level and would benefit so much if I had a collection of chapter books. So, I am creating this project in order to add to my library so that my students will be given an opportunity to increase their Reading skills that can help them both in and out of school.
My Project
This project has been created for my students in order to help them gain a larger diverse library that keeps them engaged and helps them achieve their Reading goals. Literacy is important so that students can apply their comprehension and Literacy skills in assessments and given class work, to better understand stories and plots, analyze characters, summarize story events, and develop better fluency skills. Our current library is extremely limited and there are no additional resources, therefore; I am trying my best to add to our current library with more books that will not only be more interesting, but also challenge them along the way.
