The Legacy of Frederick Douglass

This project is fully funded

I teach 10th grade DC History in a public charter high school in Southeast Washington, DC. 95% of my students come from wards 7 and 8 of DC. Although these are the two wards most affected by poverty and crime in the District, our school is a beacon of hope for my students and their families.

Our school does not have the money to buy a class set of books for our students in DC History. Most of my students cannot read the DC History textbook either, so I am always looking for extra resources and thinking of creative ways to present the material to my students.

By having a class set of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, my students can learn about the life and legacy of the great abolitionist who lived in the same neighborhood that most of my kids live in. It is also written on a level that they will be able to understand. Our school is a college preparatory academy, so these books will increase their literacy skills, which they so desperately need in order to be prepared for college. My students are on average 3 grade levels behind their peers in higher income areas, so we have three years to boost their reading levels up to an appropriate level so they can compete in colleges and universities across the country. These books will be invaluable to this end.

Please help make this wish a reality and give them a chance to analyze a primary source that they will find interesting and get prepared for college by reading something challenging and appropriate.
