My Students
Many of my students lack a positive sense of self-confidence, self-worth and self-esteem. Chess instills in young players a positive sense of self-confidence, self-worth, and self-esteem. Chess dramatically improves a child’s ability to think rationally and increases cognitive skills.
I teach in an alternative public middle school.
My students are at risk academically and need extra individual assistance. By teaching them chess, self-esteem is enhanced as students learn they can easily master what is considered by many to be a game too difficult to learn or “a game only played by smart people.” Self-esteem is also enhanced by allowing students to make friends more easily because it provides a safe forum for gathering and discussion.
Christine Palm of the New York City Schools Chess Program reports that chess results in higher grades, builds a sense of team spirit while emphasizing the ability of the individual, teaches children to try their best to win while accepting defeat with grace, and provides a concrete, inexpensive and compelling way to rise above the deprivation and self-doubt which are so much a part of their lives
My Project
Students will learn chess as part a Chess/Self-Esteem Enrichment class. Students will learn the fundamentals and basic strategy of chess. After students have been taught the fundamentals of chess, instruction will center on student based activities in which they will learn basic strategy. Students will practice their skills by playing each other in structured mini-tournaments. All of these activities connect to content by improving reading skills, math skills, social skills, self-esteem and academic motivation. Chess truly improves the student across the entire curriculum. Student enhanced creativity, reading skills, concentration, critical thinking skills, memory, academic achievement, problem solving, cultural enrichment, intellectual maturity, self-esteem, and standardized test scores will be developed as they are exposed to a systematic course of chess instruction. This will be demonstrated through test scores, grades, and attitude towards school and learning.
By having chess clocks to practice with, my students will improve their chances of success at school tournaments.
By learning chess my students will have better concentration and memory, enhanced math and reading skills, better logic, critical thinking, and creativity. Chess encourages and rewards hard work. Chess offers immediate feedback so students see how their concentration and study of the game pays off. By encouraging students to imagine all possible moves, chess trains the mind.
