My students need and deserve a well stocked classroom. We need an overhead camera to run teacher-modeled lessons. We need the ability to copy and fax in our classroom and shred confidential student information.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Jessi's classroom raised $522

My Students
Students at my school come from all across the Bay Area. We are a small (approximately 400 student) Public Charter School located in the heart of downtown Oakland. 80%+ of our students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch Programs.
We operate as a full inclusion high school serving diverse students of all backgrounds and abilities.
For many of our Special Education students, this will be their first school experience outside of Specialized Classrooms (with other Special Needs peers). We work tirelessly to support our students goals and aspirations and aim to move them beyond the label of disability.
Unfortunately, in California Special Education receives block grants through the state based on student population rather than per special needs student. While this prevents schools from over-identifying students with learning disabilities, it also makes no accommodation for if your student population stays the same, but your special ed population grows. For example, five years ago we provided Special Education services for approximately 20 students out of a school total of 400. Now still with 400 odd students, and a more than doubled 54 students with identified disabilities, our funding has not increased by much.
My Project
Our special education department is growing! Our school has been becoming more popular with incoming freshman around the Bay Area. This next school year (18-19) we look forward to adding two classes to our Learning Center to help support specialized needs in foundational math and English. Thanks to 6 generous donors, my previous project for Chromebooks was funded, making these classes possible.
With an increase of opportunity comes a need for increased capacity; that is why it is so important that our Learning Center is stocked with the resources we need to support this transformative growth.
We need a document camera to project materials. Students learn quicker when they learn from modeled skills (in the teacher famous model of 'I do - we do - you do'). A document camera would allow for us to teach using modeling for skills such as taking notes, annotating a text, step by step math problems, and many more learning opportunities!
As teachers, in order to help our growing Learning Center and new classes run smoothly, we need the ability to quickly make copies and print materials. Currently our only school copy machine is on the first floor while we are on the third. Having access to a printer/copier in our classroom would make printing and copying classroom materials and student reports (IEPs) so much easier. Additionally, special education includes a lot of confidential student information which needs to be disposed of carefully. We currently have a very small shredder (maybe 2 gallon basket). To print reports for a typical IEP meeting, we use about 150 pages which pretty much fills it up. With our growing department, it is important to maintain and protect student privacy and confidentiality. Having a higher capacity shredder would help us spend more time with students, and less shredding.
More than half of students from low‑income households
