The Language of Touch: Creating a Tactile Literacy Environment

My Project

These storytelling puppets/books, literacy, and tactile materials will be crucial in fostering oral language development in our preschool students with special needs. By engaging with sensory letters, storytelling puppets, and other hands-on learning activities, children will explore textures, shapes, and sounds in a multi-sensory way. This sensory exploration creates a foundation for language acquisition. For example, a child manipulating textured letter puzzles may begin to associate the feel of the letter with its corresponding sound, leading to increased vocalizations and attempts at pronunciation. Similarly, busy boards and movement toys can strengthen fine motor skills, which are intrinsically linked to developing oral motor skills necessary for clear speech.

We aim to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child can thrive and reach their full potential.

We serve a diverse population of children with special needs, sensory sensitivities, and varying learning abilities. Some of our students require specialized materials and accommodations to engage in learning and develop essential skills effectively. We have observed that many children benefit significantly from sensory-based learning experiences. These experiences help them make crucial brain connections, improve memory retention, and build confidence.
