My Students

It is not an easy task to find a novel that will interest high school seniors, is appropriate for a World Literature course, teaches important themes such as redemption and forgiveness, and connects to current events. I think I have found a book that does all of those things.

Many of my students will be the first in their families to graduate from high school.

Many of my students are college-bound, highly motivated, hard working and dream of success. They are awesome! They are nearly all from lower socioeconomic status but have the endurance to make it to 12th grade and most aim to go to college and get a degree. They dream of becoming everything from doctors to teachers to lawyers and entrepreneurs. Because our school used to be a middle school that became a 6-12 span school, our school is seriously lacking in novels for the older students. The textbook is great, however, it is not the same as reading a contemporary novel. It would be a true disservice to my students to enter the university setting next year not having a read a novel in the 12th grade!

My Project

The Kite Runner is a fictional novel by Khaled Hosseini set in Kabul, Afghanistan and California. It details some of Afghanistan's history, such as the fall of the monarchy and the rise of the Taliban. I have taught this novel previously and the students come to class extremely eager to read and discuss the novel. The characters are so captivating, it is almost as though they are real. My students literally cry for some of the characters in the book. They come to class so angry at some of the plot points that they want to know how they can contact the author. But that is the true power of a good book. Any book that could cause a 17 year old student to come to class and feel that much emotion is worth reading! That is why I hope you will help me to purchase these books for my students. With only 50 copies of the novel available at my school, and more than 200 students in my classes, I really need your help.

I think I can engage my students with this book, inspire them to continue reading, and discuss important themes.

It would be unfair to send my students to college without having read a novel in the 12th grade. Unfortunately, my school does not have the budget to purchase novels for my students. I hope you will help me to prepare my students for college and provide the gift of books.
