My project needs 15 copies of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales,15 copies of Homer's The Odyssey,and 12 career related books such as "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and "Discover What You're Best At".
The kids need your help to be all that they can be. These students are in grades nine through twelve in a high-need community.
For some of my students graduation day will be in four years and for other it will be in eight months. Many of my student have never heard of Homer. At first mention they thought that I was referring to a character from the cartoon, The Simpsons. Some of them remarked,"Canterbury Tales- what's that?"
My students have not been exposed to classical literature and in my opinion it would be a travesty for them to leave high school without having read some classical literature. There were many pieces that I wanted them to read. However, I have chosen pieces that I think they will most likely be able to relate to and enjoy reading in the short time that I have them. Thus, I have selected the aforementioned books for my students to read this school year.
In addition, with graduation rapidly approaching for some students, I want them to prepared for entering the work force. I sincerely believe that books on careers will assist my students in planning for the future.
In order to ensure that my students are well-rounded individuals, 15 copies of Canterbury Tales and The Odyssey are being requested. In addition, twelve books on career related topics and planning are being requested in an effort to assist students with career research and planning for their future.
