About My Students

The students I work with are excited when they have opportunities to be involved in creating their learning process. When we give them the opportunity to choose their own reading materials and start their own book clubs, students take ownership of their own education.

I meet kids every year who say they hate reading. But once they find a book that they choose and that speaks to them, they see that it's not about disliking reading - it's about discovering what you like to read. My students will love to read, but they need books that interest them to get there. They wanted to take the lead on selecting books for the class, and a few students took the leadership position of "book captain." They will lead the discussing in their respective groups, and will work with me to ensure each student in the group both has a role, and is carrying their weight of the project.

Helping my middle schoolers see that they actually can enjoy reading is one of my favorite things about my job. But many students in my class don't have access to books they want to read at home. No kid should be discouraged from reading just because they may not immediately have access to the right book for them. As a school community, we try to help instill this love of reading by giving students opportunities to read with their peers in student created book clubs. The key to making these book clubs a success is having books on the shelf that reflect student interests and experiences. In working together to explore the text, they learn how to collaborate, work in a team, and present on their discoveries.

In Their Own Words

As book captain in group 1, I take our book club project very seriously. Each of us captains will be in charge of some other kids, and we will all read the same book in the group. Then each of us will have a job. If all of us do our job we will have a full presentation to give to the rest of the class. Once all the groups have gone we will recommend which book our teachers uses for the 6th grade next year and she will have work and lessons created by kids to help them too.

My job for the group will be the captain who also has to be the Summarizer. I will be the person in the group who makes sure the Illustrator, the Word Finder, the Passage Picker, and Connector do their jobs. Each person created a piece of our presentation that shows the chain of events of our book. Especially the climax and falling action parts that lead to the conclusion. When all the groups finish we will see the Pride and Prejudice movie in spring (this is one of the books we are choosing).
