The Key To The Future? Technology!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If your teacher gave you a choice to type or hand-write an essay, what would you choose? TYPE IT! Not my students...they all chose to hand-write! Why? Because computers are foreign to them. They don't have them at home and access at school is limited. Help me turn my students onto technology!

My students are from the inner city of New York; the majority living in government housing or living with government assistance of some type.

They have duties and expectations apart from school such as watching younger siblings, cooking for the family, or cleaning. Their lives allow them little time to grow up and little time for themselves. School is their chance to better their lives, but they need your help! Education is the key to the future and the future is technology. A student cannot hope to be successful without knowledge of technology. For most of my students, technology is not an everyday part of their lives. Even those with access to computers at home do not have programs such as word, PowerPoint, and excel. That's why, in my class, I introduce them to GoogleDocs. GoogleDocs and Drive might seem like 'common sense', but to many of my students it's new technology. Help me, help them, bridge the technology gap so they find success today and in the future.

My Project

These computers will be put to good use! They are specifically for a small 9th grade self-contained special education class. The class only has five students and adding the two computers in this project to our class will allow almost every student to have their own computer. This will allow them to do a variety of things during lessons, such as: interacting with lessons via the computer, typing notes during class, typing essays, completing research projects, and overall, becoming more familiar with technology.

The donations to this project will improve my classroom, because it will make it a 'modern' technology-rich environment.

It will allow students to access computers and familiarize themselves with technology. However, the donations to this project will go beyond that; the true reach of this project is gifting underprivileged students with technology to help them compete in the competitive world they live in, the same world that has stacked the odds against them for socio-economic reasons.
