Picking up a nursing school book or a technical text would make many of us think it was written in a foreign language. We'd spend so much time deciphering the sentences structure and vocabulary that all comprehension would be lost. The same is true for my students and the books in my class library!
Many of my students do not have any books at home.
They spend their childhood living in poverty and bouncing from school to school. Yet, when we begin our literacy sessions each day, they get excited about reading to themselves or each other. On any given day you can find my kids under tables with book lights, lounging on carpets and pillows, or sitting in camp chairs giggling about their books.
My Project
Moving from fourth grade to third grade this year has required a huge adjustment in the books required to meet the needs of my students. This book collection I'm requesting will allow my class to find a book that reads with fluency instead of feeling like a foreign language. The wide range of genres will solidify their understanding of Common Core concepts and expose them to a larger vocabulary.
By receiving two copies of the books, students are able to Read to Someone increasing their fluency, comprehension, ability to discuss quality literature, and accuracy.
It gives students a chance to write book reviews and inspire others to read while the excitement is there. Literacy is the key to success in life and having interesting books on your level is the only way to build that foundation.
