Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember playing outside when you were young? Riding bikes, playing ball or hopscotch on the sidewalk? My students need these same opportunities in a safe environment. This will allow them to develop gross motor skills, increase social and emotional development and have fun at school.

Our school is in a low socioeconomic area, with most parents working more than one job that pays just above minimum wage to make ends meet.

Many of my students do not get to play outside at home because it is unsafe or their parents are not home to watch them. They come to school with little or no experiences of riding bikes or tricycles or playing sports. They are so interested in sports and health topics when we read stories, watch instructional videos or play games on the computer. I would like to give them the opportunity to learn first hand how to play various sports or ride a bike in a safe environment.

My Project

Students today have such limited opportunity to enjoy school. Beginning in pre-kindergarten with fun, hands-on learning is paramount to engage these students. We are also in a part of the country that is getting more and more obese by the day. Starting these students off in an environment where they learn about exercise, movement and health in a fun and safe way may help stave off some of these problems in the future. Not only will it help them learn healthy habits, but it will also increase their social development by teaching them to take turns, help out others who are struggling and play games fairly. Emotionally, these students will grow also by learning how it feels to cheer on others and help when something is difficult. They will learn teamwork, support, and caring for others feels amazing.

These students need a safe, fun environment where they can grow and learn to help others.

Having these items may seem trivial to some, but for our population of students it will mean the beginning of a lifetime of healthy habits, social and emotional growth and overall a way to teach them that their education is fun and is worth putting in the effort.
