This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our high school was built to address the limitations of the overcrowded Roosevelt HS and Garfield HS in the historic East Los Angeles unincorporated area of Southern California. The East Los Angeles community is colorful, dynamic and revolutionary. On its main corridors you will meet loquacious street vendors, vivacious grandmas and hardworking parents . Like the community, our school is a couldron of innovative ideas, creative thinking, industrious efforts, resilient spirit and relentless hope for progress. A group of talented, compassionate, and industrious professionals delivers rigorous and culturally relevant lesson plans crafted with love and meticulous care to about 400 students. The vast majority of students score below average in literacy and numeracy skills. Additionally support for our classroom projects can support our goal to deliver equitable learning opportunities for our children in spite of their demographics.
My Project
The vast majority of my students don’t read because they can’t find books they like in the sea of titles in our school library. Overwhelmed, they choose random books. Discouraged, they hardly read books on their own. To become readers, my students need personalized reading lists. They need an experienced reader who knows them well, to guide their book search. With an average reading level of 5th grade (that remains quite constant throughout their high school career) my ninth grade English students desperately need a curated classroom library that inspires them to read daily. As their guide in learning, it is my responsibility to curate that classroom library for them.
