The Joy Luck Club and Mahjong Fun

Help me give my students the opportunity to read a classic story about family relationships and learn to play the popular Chinese game, Mahjong.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds. Growing up in a rural community, these students, although having limited opportunities to experience life outside of our small town, are all heart. They love what they do, whether it be auto mechanics, sports, agriculture, or the arts.

COVID has affected every part of these students' lives.

The students in my classes have had to compromise or give up almost all of our high school traditions, many events and competitions, and most social occasions over the past two years. The year prior to the COVID years, schools closed down for two weeks for a teacher walkout.

Inside the classroom, student learning has been shifted from hands-on activities to digital learning. My students have adapted to technology for every part of the learning experience. Lessons have been delivered via Zoom, work has been completed using the Google Suite, and learning/assessment has become dependent upon technology.

My Project

Reading this classic novel will help my students learn about the Chinese culture, finding similarities about their culture. This novel will help me bridge the past and present cultural norms about the Chinese population.

We will interact with various elements of Chinese culture, especially Mahjong.

Students will learn to play the popular game and share stories while playing.

During COVID, students were not able to socialize with each other. They have missed out on maintaining healthy relationships. Games, like Mahjong, will help students not only connect to the Chinese culture but with each other, too.
