Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have always known that somehow I had to give back to my community. When I became a teacher it was not difficult to decide where I would teach. I teach in a low income school located in the heart of the Mexican Community. I teach in a 5th grade bilingual classroom, where the majority of my students come from homes where the highest level of education is 6th grade. Although I wish I could bring all the needed resources to my school, I find it impossible.

Every year my students read Passage to Freedom. This is a child's picture book about Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese diplomat who helped thousands of Jewish refugees in Lithuania escape Europe during the Holocaust. This story gets my students interested in learning more about the holocaust. I find myself scrambling to the library and pulling out every known book about the holocaust. I can never find the number of books that I need.

For this upcoming year I have created a unit that is centered around the Holocaust. Students will learn about the Rey's (authors of curious George) and their narrow escape on bike from Paris just hours before the Nazis seized control of the city in 1940. This will give the students a new perspective on the holocaust as we use a well know figure (creators of curious George) and involve them in WWII. Students will read these in small groups and a we will have guided reading groups for Number the Stars. Students will then work on their WWII projects in which they will research topics such as: Survivors, Rescuers and Treatment of Jews.

You will make it possible for me to reach a number of students and teach them about the Holocaust, an event in history which should not be forgotten. We must empower our students with knowledge so that events like these will not continue to re-occur.
