Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I teach are enthusiastic, curious, and passionate about learning. They enjoy being creative and expressing themselves in unique ways.
Nearly all of the children I teach here at our Title I school in the inner city come from hard-working immigrant parents that strongly value education.
Although many of my students come from backgrounds of substantial economic hardship, you wouldn't know it by looking at their eager faces. They love coming to school and learning new things. Having inspiring new supplies on their desks the very first day of school will thrill them!
My Project
Do you remember that childhood feeling you had each year when all of your school supplies were fresh and new? Oh the wonder of writing your name on your new things! Well, it's a brand spanking new year which means I need a fresh batch of supplies for this year's 5th grade class. With school starting in a month, I hope to surprise each child with some supplies that they will cherish all year long.
Educational budget cuts in our public schools mean no extra money for supplies like the ones I'm seeking.
Sketchbooks and big sturdy notebooks are simply not seen as must-have items, when in fact they are at the core of everything we do in the classroom. Both writers and visual thinkers need materials they can refer back to again and again.
Students love writing essays and narratives even more when they know they have folders, notebooks, and journals to contain their big ideas.
My burgeoning journal writers also appreciate a ready supply of good bullet journal stencils and fine line markers to make their pages graphic and glorious. When art and writing are joined kids are inspired to create daily practices that will carry them far beyond the classroom.
