Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a special education resource teacher working at a public school in a large urban area. My students have mild to moderate disabilities including autism, processing disorders, and other health impairments. As a special education resource department, my colleagues and I are always looking for ways to teach students new and important life and career skills that will help ensure their future success. We have an amazing group of hardworking students, many of whom come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Teachers from our special education resource department are working with our general education colleagues to create a school newspaper, The Bear Times, which will create inclusive opportunities for our neurotypical and neurodivergent students to work side by side.
The Bear Times paper will provide students with the opportunity to improve their reading, writing, and collaborative skills. Our reporters and readership will come from all backgrounds and everyone will reap the rewards.
There are many benefits to having a school paper. School papers create a sense of community. Families will be able to use the paper as a communication tool to learn about important topics and events. The paper will highlight specific students such as the young entrepreneurs or athletes and cover events such as STEAM night or music and dance recitals. This will increase interest in reading because students will be engaged by topics that are written by them and about them. The Bear Times will create a culture of literacy and be the voice of the student body.
Our special education resource department is seeking funding for equipment that will allow us to create, publish and distribute a professional looking school newspaper. We are in need of a reliable color printer.
