The Intersection of Social Issues and Classroom Education and Awareness

My students need new context to explore in developing the importance of graphic novels as literature, and these would make for wonderful additions to add to my course structure.

My Students

Our school culture derives on the learning curve!

This is my third year teaching a course on graphic novels in the classroom.

I work at a visual arts high school located in the St. Louis area. A high percentage of the student body come from an artistic background of some degree, and while these range anywhere from dance to painting, the addition of my course has helped expand on the art of graphic novels, while tackling societal issues evident within them.

My Project

My project consists in studying graphic novel content in a literary perspective, tackling social issues relevant this day in a classroom structure. In using these texts, the cross between artists and context helps to add a depth to the conversation of societal problems we all deal with every day.

I need newer books to broaden the content area, and widen the scope of discussion when analyzing every day issues in the pages of a graphic novel.

Starting year three in teaching this course, my hope is to bring to the forefront of today's youth related content in the form of artistry and text.
