For the past few weeks, some of my students have been playing a trick on me. When tasked with an online assignment, I have been under the impression that they are working ever so diligently with completing my assignments. As of late, I have noticed that surfing the net trumps classwork and grades.
Located in Southeast Washington, D.C., my students truly know the meaning of hardship.
Outside of our school campus, their lives are filled with violence and poverty. If they have to experience this outside of school, I feel that it is my responsibility to provide the opposite while they are in school! I want to be able to provide as much as I can to them while they are under my care. It's the final stretch and although the school year is over in a few months, I don't want my scholars to get too relaxed in the classroom. While several students are still very much engaged in the learning process, I have noticed a few who have skipped spring fever and have gone directly to making summer plans. Instead of focusing on classroom tasks at hand as it relates to reading, writing, and math websites, some students are checking out the latest sneakers, music, and clothing for their age group. With yearly testing coming up, I want my students to be prepared to achieve!
My Project
The tablets in the classroom will provide an extra push to those students who have fast tracked to summer! Each tablet can represent a content and they would be ideal for station activities. Even better, if a student needs to refocus, they are able to independently utilize the tablets. For reading, students will be able to access websites that will have stories read to them, stories they can read, and comprehension questions designed to note mastery of content. Additionally, they are able to utilize reading apps that will be downloaded in advance. I am hoping to achieve the same goals with the math tablet. Students will be able to interactively utilize the websites from classroom lessons to improve weaknesses in math content. The less focus on wanting to surf the internet, the more focus on completing the educational tasks at hand!
The tablets that we are requesting are sure to help students who have started to lose focus as we approach the end of the school year!
Through this outlet, students are able to independently, or collaboratively, work on concepts without the urge of wanting to surf the internet. We are hoping that you will be able to help us out!
