My students need 35 copies of the autobiography written by Ruby Bridges so that they can see how the Civil Rights Movement happened from someone who was actually there!

My Students

Though the Civil Rights Movement is recent history, and a chapter that has yet to be fully closed, I have to really hustle to make my students realize how relevant it is to their lives. It is essential that they learn the lessons of the Movement so they can become the kinds of leaders that we need.

Our students attend one of the most rigorous charter schools in the country as they seek to climb the mountain to college.

They go to school longer, they do more work, they have an extended school year. But here is what I love about them: they do it all with a smile on their face. We're in a rough neighborhood, these kids have gone to tough schools, but they show up every day and prove to anyone who meets them that it's all about where you finish, not where you start.

My Project

The combination of our amazing scholars, put together with a deep knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement is an inspiring combination that I get very excited about. An autobiography written by Ruby Bridges would give our students the kind of insight into the movement that will make this recent history come immediately to life for these eager scholars. To learn about someone who was their age when everything was happening would also make this important period in history extremely relevant.

I know that the KIPPsters at our school are standing on the precipice of amazing and important futures.

They are motivated, curious, and eager to shape a great future for themselves. With a deep background knowledge of the best practices of our past, we can rest assured that these scholars will become the types of leaders that we need for a bright and exciting future!
