My students need a class trip to Washington DC to learn about the history they have been studying in 8th grade as well as to learn about the history of their nation.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning about your history is not the same as actually seeing it. Students who go to the nation's capitol get a chance to learn about their history in an indescribable way.
I am writing on behalf of an urban school in California, serving grades 6, 7, and 8.
This school is a cooperative charter - meaning that we are made up of families who are involved in every aspect of running our school. We are the only charter middle school in our district and we serve a student population that is about 85% low income. We are also at the top of the district on STAR test results and we push all our students to strive for academic excellence.
Every year for the past five years our eighth graders have had the privilege of going to Washington DC as an end of the year field trip. This trip offers a powerful first hand experience of what these young people have studied in their history class. As this is a school trip we truly believe that every child has the right to go regardless of monetary constraints. The students, their families, and the school staff work very hard at many different fundraising projects. It is important that we are all involved but it is not enough.
My Project
I am asking for help to sponsor 5 students, who without financial support, would not be able to go. On this trip the students are able to participate, as other students from all across the country do, in this rite of passage from child to young citizen. For many of our students, the majority of whom are first generation American citizens, this is their first time out of the state and the only chance they will ever have to see this part of the country. It is their moment to be awed and proud. Our study trip covers Jamestown, Williamsburg, Monticello, and Washington DC.
Your donation will make it possible for my students to have this experience.
This trip is very important to these kids and your support truly will make a difference. You will help to provide a trip that these students will remember for the rest of their lives.
