The Incredible DIY Experimental Musical Instrument Project!

My students need a variety of art supplies and instrument construction materials including wooden panels, box forms, pickups, and tuning pegs to create homemade guitars.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Be's classroom raised $535

My Students

I work with students who are gifted and talented in the visual arts. My students are part of a high-need community and deal with issues of extreme urban poverty and crime in their daily lives. The Talented Visual Arts program gives them the opportunity to develop their natural talents.

We face a vast array of challenges in Southeast Louisiana.

My students deserve the chance to explore their creative abilities and work on exciting and innovative art projects. The mentorship time and "outside of the box" opportunities that I strive to provide to my students may give some of these children the skills and inspiration necessary to escape the vicious cycle of poverty and crime in our beautiful (but troubled) city and to fulfill their dreams.

My Project

I am requesting materials that will give us the opportunity to build homemade electric guitars based on the old time "canjo". The students will design their own unique one-string guitars with custom bodies and real functional hardware (pick-ups, tuning pegs, and strings). The design possibilities are limitless and will open up the students to ideas about homemade instruments, a basic understanding of musical scales/octaves, and functional design. The canjo/guitars will be elaborately decorated, painted and collaged and then covered with a lustrous layer of resin to seal them and make them last a lifetime. The finished guitars will also be beautiful works of art and I will organize a local exhibition to show them off. I have already acquired many items we will need for this project through the generosity of donors and my own fundraising efforts. The students will also be able to mine many of the "junk" materials we need at home and at school.

Your generosity will enable my students to create some incredible artwork, learn more about the connections between music, art, and science, participate in hands-on functional design, and create a musical instrument that they can play and/or proudly display for years to come.
