This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Bilingual students from lower-income families living in food deserts face numerous challenges that impact their ability to focus and learn effectively. One critical need is access to snacks during the school day. Hunger can significantly hinder cognitive function, making it more difficult for students to concentrate, process information, and participate in class discussions. For bilingual students, who already face language barriers, hunger can exacerbate learning difficulties.
Living in food deserts means these students often lack access to affordable, nutritious food.
Providing snacks at school can help alleviate this issue, ensuring that students are nourished and ready to engage in their education. Nutritious snacks, such as fruits, whole grains, or nuts, can enhance brain function and improve learning outcomes.
Additionally, providing snacks shows students that their needs are valued, fostering a sense of support and security. When hunger is addressed, students are better able to focus on their academic work and develop a positive relationship with school. This small act can have a big impact on a bilingual student's ability to succeed, emotionally and academically, setting them up for a better future.
