Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Poland, Ecuador, Albania, Colombia are just some of the countries that describe the children I service. I have many students who enter speaking little to no English. Although they may all come from different countries, they have the same goal in mind. They all want to come to school to learn and have fun. This school is located in a low-income/high poverty school district. When students come to school, they are granted the chance to forget anything bad going on outside school and learn and grow alongside their friends.
My ENL students bring such diversity into the classroom.
They not only learn in the classroom but are given the chance to teach others about where they come from as well. They are proud of where they are from, but also excited to learn about America. They are eager to learn English to communicate with all their new friends. These students are our future and I want to give them the chance to become successful students even if their English language skills are limited.
My Project
This year, I have students who do not speak English. They come from all over the world. I need to start with as many visuals as possible. I want the students to have picture cards that they can refer to when reading and creating their own stories as well. I teach a very broad range of students; pictures are something that all students can relate to no matter what language they speak.
Photos bring the language to life for my non-English speaking students.
Through the use of pictures we can build our vocabulary and help with reading and writing. I want my students to be successful readers and writers. I believe that with these materials, my students will become lifelong learners and succeed throughout all subject areas.
The Story Sequencing Cards are a wonderful tool to not only help students understand put a story in order, but create a story of their own using pictures. This item can be used in so many ways with all grade levels. The younger students can work on putting a story in order. Students can use the picture cards to speak about a story and practice their language skills. The cards can also be used as a prompt for story writing. The What's Happening? Photo Cards can be a wonderful tool used for writing and speaking practice as well. Simply by looking at a picture, many stories can be created. The possibilities are endless!
The Vocabulary Development Photo Cards have various topics translated into multiple languages (Spanish, Russian, Korean, Hindi, Cantonese, just to name a few) to reach all types of English language learners.
3-Letter Word Building Puzzles will allow my students to have fun practicing their sounds and putting the sounds together to form words. This will help with reading and writing skills.
