My students need a class set of CATCHING FIRE to read current literature, to connect to a larger society and to prepare to participate in the Hunger Games book festival.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Lawton's classroom raised $544

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading is a challenge for nearly all of my students. This book is an awesome read for high school students because it teaches so much about living life with courage. Also there is the extra incentive that students can participate in the school Hunger Games festival if they read and study the book.
Our school is an awesome school!
With a low socio-economic background, and lower reading levels, my students work hard to achieve, and their hard work shows because more than 90% of them pass state tests every year. My high school students give of their time getting toys, clothes, and food donations for Christmas time for less-fortunate families in shelters and children without families. Reading well is a skill they must have to be able move on to college and be successful.
My Project
CATCHING FIRE is a vivid, compelling, imaginative storyline with characters so realistic and beautifully described they start to feel like friends--students are motivated to reflect on their own ideas and how they can be better people. The story is painful, tortuous, exhilarating, imaginative--students are motivated to think critically about the world around them and what they can do to make life better. This is a book that transmits what it means to have hope and persevere.
Aside from reading and studying the book, my students will participate in a Hunger Games book festival, both in design and implementation for the school, as well as involving the community to participate.
By reading and studying this book, my students will be able to reach out to the community and showcase their education in a fun festival of games that is literature-based and involves community stakeholders.
By being able to garner support from the community for their education by showcasing what they are learning, more opportunities can open for them both for college scholarships and future employment prospects.
