My Students
"Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact."
I teach 6th grade science at a middle school in Walterboro, SC.
Many times, before my students walk in the door they ask, "Are we doing something fun today?" They will work diligently on projects that are meaningful to them, and I've often heard, "How do we only have 5 minutes left in this class?! I feel like we just got in here!" I make every effort to ensure our work is relevant and engaging so that our time together in class is never wasted.
My students loathe worksheets, though. So do I. Can you blame us?! Do you like to do meaningless work?
My Project
At the end of March, I will be leaving my students to go on maternity leave. At that point in the year, I will have covered all of my state standards except 1 or 2. My students will then begin reviewing for state tests, and I know I will be in BIG TROUBLE if I leave them with worksheets or textbook work every day!
While I'm out, I've decided to have my students dive into one of my favorite science fiction novels, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. When reading this novel, not only will my students be improving their reading and literacy skills, but they will also have an opportunity to use their imaginations regarding various science topics we've covered this year.
I teach in a rural, Title I school district.
My students already know what it's like to be behind their peers in technology. The least we could do for them is provide a modern novel that they can relate to.
