My Students

Have you ever wondered why you look the way you do, or what your future children might inherit from you? That's something my students really get excited about learning.

I teach 8th grade General Science in a suburban school.

They are a pretty diverse group of students that are motivated learners when given the opportunity. I also happen to teach an inclusion class where students with special needs make up a little less than half the class.

My Project

Since there is not enough funding for science supplies, science classes in my school tend to have enough equipment for just the basic supplies. I am asking for a human genome lab kit that can be reusable year after year as my students study their Genetics unit. This kit includes many hands-on activities that I could use to supplement my curriculum. Students will be able to develop genotypes for various physical traits as well as study the patterns of inheritance. They will also have the opportunity to investigate genetic disorders and the ethical issues that come from the advance of genetics. The large DNA replication model would allow me to help students see how DNA makes copies of itself.

With this genetics kit and DNA model, I hope to provide a more meaningful experience for my students as they learn about why they look the way they do and why learning about genetics has such real life implications.
