My Students

My passionate and highly capable middle level students desire to be heard. I agree with Martin Luther King, Jr. when he says, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.” That is why I strive to provide highly engaging text that addresses topics relevant to today’s youth who are growing up in times of ongoing adversity. Education must encourage our middle level students to give voice to their thoughts, opinions, and dreams for a just society and must instill a sense of hope for a bright future.

Passionate and eager to voice their beliefs and possible solutions to social issues that pervade our nation, my students need paper copies of text for distance learning that encourage them to speak their truth regarding social justice and equity.

It is imperative that students have access to quality literature that allows a shared experience whether learning in person or remotely. COVID related restrictions do not allow students to take home or share copies of our class novels or other texts. Thus, acquiring relevant text for every student is imperative for improving reading skills and for developing b

My Project

In addition to need highly engaging text centered on relevant social issues, my middle level students need ample learning experiences during remote learning that do not involve a screen! Thus, being able to take home a copy of text that directly relates to their current life experience is invaluable.

By supplying my students with a copy of "The Hate U Give" and a Scholastic magazine, students will enjoy their "read to self" time as part of their literacy block's Daily Five, will develop a deeper love of reading, will improve their reading skills, and will give voice to THEIR truths about issues that matter to them.

Ultimately, you will be encouraging hope in our young people as they discover possible solutions to societal problems.
