The Holocaust

My students need 8 books about the Holocaust, including "Six Million Paper Clips: The Making of a Children's Holocaust Memorial" and "Terrible Things: An Allegory of the Holocaust".

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bencic's classroom raised $175

Teaching comes from the heart--although some may say that teaching comes from our state standards. It's true that I teach our state standards--that's what I'm contracted to teach. There's tons of "tested" material that my students just seem to soak up. I'm proud of how they grasp those important skills, concepts, and ideas. However, I also strive to go beyond our state standards and cover topics that are equally important--and oftentimes my students have questions they need answered. The Holocaust is one of those important aspects of human history that my students have many questions about. They demand answers and I need your help!

I teach 4th grade in a very small rural school in middle Tennessee. My self-contained classroom is perfect for me because it provides me with the flexibility to plan units of study such as the Holocaust--many teachers are unable to do this, and I am grateful to have this opportunity. I noticed my students' interest in the Holocaust when our class received the class set of "Number the Stars." (This class set of books came from a donor from Donorschoose!) Anyway, after we read the book, it seems as if their questions were multiplied. We later saw a local production of "Number the Stars." Still more questions. I bought another set of books related to this time in history called "The Twenty and Ten", but they still have more questions. It seemed as if I opened a can of worms! Here is where I need your help: I plan to expand my Holocaust unit next year, and I need a variety of books on the subject. Our school does not have these resources. In addition to the books that I am requesting from you, I have already purchased some videos including "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." I'm putting a lot of work, time, and money into this project, and these resources I'm requesting from you will make a big impact.

The books I'm need are mostly age-appropriate informational reference books that I will allow my students to use during literacy centers. There is one about Hitler that I hope will answer a lot of questions. I may also assign a project for my students to complete, and the books will also be helpful for this purpose. Additionally, there are a few historical fiction books and personal narratives that will provide more stories that they will find interesting.

Some may think that 4th grade is too early to teach about the Holocaust. I disagree. I am planning these lessons carefully, considering my students' age and maturity. Informing parents about the lessons and staying in contact with them will also help alleviate your concerns if you have them. There's so much to learn from this time in history--4th graders can learn from this, too. Sometimes I see students who tend to bully--I think that the lessons from the Holocaust would be important for them. You will make it possible for my students to explore their feelings and questions about prejudice--this terrible time in history must be addressed so that we can learn from our mistakes. Thanks so much for your consideration.
