The History of the Environmental Conservation Movement & Current Realities
Help me give my students a class set of Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, and books to support the creation of a mini-library on issues related to climate change and geography.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When I ask my students about the issues that concern them the most, the top two all classes are gun violence and climate change. I used "Silent Sprint," by Rachel Carson years ago before the pandemic. My students remembered so much of the book because they were able to relate the impacts of climate change they experience to the scientific understandings in the book.
"Silent Spring," is a classic for many reasons.
Ms. Carson is first and foremost a beautiful writer and her words resonate even for students who live in a concrete world. Students become more interested in nature and exploring the natural world around them.
We have a hydroponic farm in our school. Our students are learning how to "urban farm," and make food from the food they have produced. This book is an excellent complement to our environmental growth and academic excellence.
